China is succeeding in curbing the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Swiss Federal Councilor Micheline Calmy-Ray said Friday after meeting with Chinese leaders.

Micheline Calmy-Ray, also head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, said she had told Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, Minister of Foreign Affairs Li Zhaoxing, and State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan that she supported their efforts to fight the disease.

She said she and her Chinese colleagues also agreed to reinforce high-level political cooperation between Switzerland and China and cooperation in the economic, development, environment, tourism and migration fields.

On the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Micheline Calmy-Ray said Switzerland and China shared common views on the peaceful and diplomatic solution to the DPRK crisis, the need for a nuclear-free Korean peninsula, and the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

She said Switzerland supported the recent Beijing negotiations and hoped they would continue.

Micheline Calmy-Ray arrived in Beijing Friday morning as a guest of Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing.
