Bodies of Victims Recovered Following Coal Mine Gas Blast in S.China

The bodies of the remaining eight of the total of 24 coal miners killed in a gas explosion in southwest China's Yunnan Province on Wednesday afternoon were recovered on Friday morning.

The bodies of the remaining eight of the total of 24 coal miners killed in a gas explosion in southwest China's Yunnan Province on Wednesday afternoon were recovered on Friday morning.

The blast, which occurred in the Jizuo Coalmine in Yunnan's Huaping County, at about 15:10 hours Wednesday, left 24 of the 27 miners on duty trapped in the wreckage.

Three of the 27 miners, who were working near the exit of the mine shaft, were knocked down by the force of the explosion, but managed to survive and were sent to a hospital for treatment. They are the only survivors of the blast.

In the wake of the accident, intensive rescue operations were organized, and by late Thursday night, the bodies of 16 miners hadbeen found. The bodies of the remaining eight victims were recovered at approximately 04:40 hours Friday. By press time, allof the bodies had been removed from the mine shaft, said local sources.

The cause of the gas explosion is being investigated.
