Twenty four miners have been rescued and nine remain trapped underground following a coal mine flooding accident yesterday in north China's Shanxi Province.

The flood happened at 2:10 on May 19 in Fudong Mine of the province's Shouyang County, trapping 33 miners.

Four water pumps have been operating around the clock to clear water from the mine.

The rescued miners were healthy and uninjured, said Gong Anku, director of the province's safety supervision department, who was on the site to provide guidance.
