More male patients die of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) than females, and the men die more slowly, said a Chinese epidemiologist Tuesday.

Latest statistics from the Ministry of Health (MOH) show that as of May 20, a total of 294 patients had died of the flu-like virus on Chinese mainland.

Male patients accounted for 57.8 percent while female patients were 42.2 percent, but the reasons for this were unknown, said Li Chengyi, an medical analyst from the anti-SARS team under the MOH.

It took longer for men to contract the SARS virus and then unfortunately die from it, according to Li.

MOH figures show that, on average, male patients died 16.8 days after contracting the disease, while female patients lasted only 14 days.

The MOH figures show that of SARS patients over 60 years old who had died, the men lasted an average of 14.3 days and the women12.5 days.

Of patients under 60 years old who died, the males survived for17.6 days on average, and the females 14.7 days, Li said.

As of May 20, China reported 5,248 cumulative SARS cases and 2,254 patients have been discharged from hospital upon recovery.
