Senior Chinese Leaders on Fight against SARS & Development

Senior Chinese leaders Wu Bangguo and Li Changchun have urged governments at all levels to strive to beat severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), while continuing to promote social and economic development.

Senior Chinese leaders Wu Bangguo and Li Changchun have urged governments at all levels to strive to beat severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), while continuing to promote social and economic development.

The two leaders, both members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee,made the call during inspection tours of different areas.

During his May 15 to 20 tour of east China's Jiangxi Province, Wu, also the country's top legislator, outlined the three targets China should meet in its fight against the disease.

The targets were eventual eradication of the disease, creation of a sound monitoring and information system, and a working system for public health crises to improve the country's capacity to prevent and curb epidemic diseases.

During his May 12 to 20 tour of Hubei Province in central Chinaand Zhejiang Province in east China, Li Changchun also called for the creation of an emergency response mechanism to deal with public health crises.

Li inspected disease control and prevention centers, construction sites, research institutes, residential compounds, and rural families in the two provinces.
