Three Gorges Project will Double as Flood Fighting Tool
The multibillion-dollar Three Gorges Hydropower Project, still under construction on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, can regulate water level during the flooding season.
The multibillion-dollar Three Gorges Hydropower Project, still under construction on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, can regulate water level during the flooding season.
This was revealed Tuesday at a meeting about the project in Yichang City, Hubei Province, central China, as part of a study toascertain when the dam would be ready for use.
Under the original plan the dam would not be of use as flood protection until 2006, but the devastating 1998 floods had prompted the central government to change the design to allow the dam help curb flood waters during this year's flood season.
The dam is designed to reach a height of 135 meters, or even 140 meters if needed, by June 15.
By 2007, when the whole project is completed, the dam will reach a height of 170 meters, and by 2009 the reservoir will be able to hold 22.15 billion cubic meters of water.
