5 Aceh Rebels Killed in Clashes with Indonesian Military

Five members of the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) were killed on Tuesday as the military operation launched by the Indonesian government entered the second day on Tuesday.

Five members of the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) were killed on Tuesday as the military operation launched by the Indonesian government entered the second day on Tuesday.

Of the casualties, four were killed during clash in South Aceh and another was found dead in Aceh Besar following raids by the Indonesian Military (TNI) on Monday, Detikcom online news service reported.

At least six people were killed since the operation began on Monday.

Indonesian authorities accused GAM of burning down 10 school buildings and two offices belonging to the state-run electricity company PLN and a non-governmental organization in Aceh Besar regency early on Tuesday.

Aceh Besar police chief Heru Budi Erhanto said GAM was responsible for the incineration but none of GAM members has been arrested for.

"We are still running after them," he said.
