The Indonesian Military (TNI) claimed Monday it has captured nine members of the separatist FreeAceh Movement (GAM) during the first day of military operation in conflict-torn Aceh.

Speaking to reporters here by teleconference from Aceh, TNI spokesman Ahmad Yani Basuki said the nine rebels are currently under investigation.

GAM members have assimilated with civilians and dressed in plain clothes but planned to attack in the nights, Basuki quoted the captured rebels as telling the military.

"They (GAM) threatened to burn down Aceh," Basuki said.

He said one civilian was shot to death by alleged GAM members in Bireuen district, the first reported victim since the war began on Monday morning.
