A senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official has called for a decisive victory in the war on SARS and enhanced efforts to maintain sustained, rapid and healthy economic growth, by carrying forward the revolutionary Yan'an Spirit.

Wu Guanzheng, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made his comments during an inspection tour of Shaanxi province, northwest China, from May 14-19.

He visited Yan'an city, the prestigious revolutionary cradle of the CPC-led liberated base area during the mid 1930s-mid 40s, Xi'an city, the provincial capital of Shaanxi province, and Baoji city, where he talked to local factory workers, farmers, grassroot-level officials, medical personnel and college students.

"Economic development constitutes the basis for us to overcome the difficulties," he said. Wu is also secretary of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.

During his five-day stay in Shaanxi, Wu also investigated into state-owned enterprises' maintenance of Party work guidelines and urged leaders of these companies to be self-disciplined, further improve the management of factory affairs in an open and apparent way, so as to guard against and free them any corrupt practices.
