China's southernmost province of Hainan, the tropical island famous for its clean environment, plans to convert 180,000 ha of farmland, wasteland and barren hills into woodland between 2003 and 2005, local officials said Monday.
Sources with the Forestry Department of the Hainan provincial government say the project will result an increase in the island province's green coverage ratio from 53.3 to 58.5 percent.
The central government will earmark 3.539 billion yuan (431 million US dollars) for the project, which involves 130,000 ha of farmland and 46,600 ha of wasteland and barren hills.
The province plans to convert 66,000 ha of farmland, wasteland and hills to woodland this year in 18 cities and counties across the island.
Hainan, China's second largest island, second only to Taiwan, is home to the country's favorite holiday resorts, cleanest air and most beautiful beaches.
