A fierce gas explosion at a mine in Liaoyang city, northeast China's Liaoning Province, has left seven people dead and four injured.

Sources from the local government said the explosion happened 6:30 p.m. Saturday about 400 to 500 meters below ground, when 11 miners were working underground at the private mine.

All the injured were in a safe condition and the bodies of those killed had been retrieved after an emergency rescue operation.

The cause of the accident was still under investigation. The Liaoyang government has required all mines to suspend operations until safety checks have been carried out.
