Macao Resident Isolated for Pneumonia Symptoms

A Macao businessman living in south China's Guangdong Province was sent to isolation ward in the Government Hospital of the Macao Special Administrative Region after X-ray images revealed signs of pneumonia, announced the Macao health authority Sunday night.

A Macao businessman living in south China's Guangdong Province was sent to isolation ward in the Government Hospital of the Macao Special Administrative Region after X-ray images revealed signs of pneumonia, announced the Macao health authority Sunday night.

The 48-year-old Macao resident who dwells in Zhongshan, Guangdong, was hospitalized today, after he came to seek medical help in the hospital, Lei Chin Ion, head of the hospital said at apress conference.

The man told healthcare workers that he drove across the Land Checkpoint of Gongbei, which links Zhuhai City of Guangdong Province with Macao, to enter Macao by himself in the evening of May 17.

The patient said that the infrared screening at the checkpoint did not detect his fever, but he told healthcare workers about hissymptoms of having fever and cough a week ago. He drove to the hospital by himself alone Sunday, when his body temperature was still measured normal, but X-ray images revealed signs of pneumonia.

So far, there is no evidence to prove that he contracted SevereAcute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

Macao, which has only verified one SARS case, does not have anysuspected SARS patient now. The 29-year-old confirmed SARS patienthas recovered in the hospital without suffering from fever for five days. X-ray images showed distinct improvement of his lungs infection.

None of the two patients and eight medical staff, who have keptin quarantine for having contacted the patient for eight days, hasany symptoms, according to the health authority.
