Panama has set up a medical center with the most sophisticated laboratories in Central Americato detect the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
The center is ready to serve, Director of Institute Gorgas, Blas Armien told the press here on Saturday.
Armien pointed out that this center will enable a quicker detection of SARS and other respiratory illnesses. Previous systems could delay up to 21 days.
The center makes Panama the place of reference of the region inexamining possible cases, he added.
The Panamanian government keeps sanitary controls around sea-ports, border posts and in the Tocumen International Airport to prevent access of the disease in the country.It has invested 100,000 US dollars in preventing SARS.
