S.Korea complets construction of inter-Korean transportation routes in DMZ

The South Korean military finished the reconstruction of inter-Korean railways and roads on Saturday, some nine months after the work began, reported the South Korean Yonhap News agency.

The South Korean military finished the reconstruction of inter-Korean railways and roads on Saturday, some nine months after the work began, reported the South Korean Yonhap News agency.

Under an agreement between South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the two countries began the preparation and re-construction work of the inter-Korean railways and roads last September.

The South Korean forces were responsible for landmine removing and construction work inside the demilitarized zone (DMZ), the buffer zone between South Korea and the DPRK.

"We have completed the removal of land mines and roadbed construction without a single accident," Shin Deok-ho, chief supervisor of the DMZ work, was quoted by Yonhap News.

The remaining work outside the DMZ will be turned over to the Seoul Regional Construction Management Office, and the whole work is expected to complete between this July and August, said Yonhap.

The two countries last year agreed to end the reconnection of the Gyeongui railway and its adjacent roads located in the westernpart of the peninsula by the end of last year and the spring of 2003 respectively. But the work was delayed due to various reasons.

They also agreed to reconnect the initial 27 km line of the Donghae railway, linking eastern coastal cities across the border,and its 14.2 km adjacent road within an one-year time span from last September.
