S. Korean President Reaffirms Peaceful Solution to DPRK Nuclear Issue
South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun said on Saturday that he and his US counterpart George W. Bush had fully agreed in principle that the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) should be resolved peacefully.
South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun said on Saturday that he and his US counterpart George W. Bush had fully agreed in principle that the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) should be resolved peacefully.
"I told President Bush that there should be no more calamities of war on the Korean Peninsula, and President Bush expressed his full agreement," Roh, who arrived at the Seongnam Airport after a seven-day working visit to the United States, said in a televised speech.
"We will consider continuing inter-Korean exchange in a flexible manner in line with how the situation on the nuclear issue goes," he added.
Roh, who met with Bush for the first time on Wednesday in Washington since he took office in February, said he had successfully built private close relationship and mutual confidence with the US president.
In a four-point joint statement on issues of mutual concern released after the summit, the two leaders expressed their confidence in a peaceful solution to the nuclear issue of the DPRK.
The statement also mentioned the realignment of the South Korea-US military alliance under close consultation of the two countries and the promotion of bilateral economic exchanges.
