Taiwan Reports Record 34 New SARS Cases in One Day

Taiwan reported a record one-day rise in SARS infections on the island Saturday, raising the number of cases by 34 to a total of 308. The death toll remained at 35.

Taiwan reported a record one-day rise in SARS infections on the island Saturday, raising the number of cases by 34 to a total of 308.

Taiwan, the third worst affected area after the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, says the death toll remained at 35.

The island's top health official Twu Shiing-jer, resigned on Friday to take the blame for a string of SARS) outbreaks at three major hospitals. The authorities named a prominent epidemiologist, Chen Chien-jen, to take his place.
