35 Killed in Indian Train Fire

Three coaches of the Mumbai-Amritsar Frontier Mail caught fire Thursday morning, killing at least 35 passengers, local TV reported.

Three coaches of the Mumbai-Amritsar Frontier Mail caught fire Thursday morning, killing at least 35 passengers, local TV reported.

Another 20 passengers suffered burn injuries in the fire that engulfed the rear coaches of the train, which was heading towards Amritsar.

The incident happened at 4.00 am local time about 16 kilometersfrom Ludhiana in north India's Punjab state.

The train stopped and the burning coaches were detached at Ladawal railroad station. The train later left for Amristar.

According to initial reports, the fire began in the S-4 compartment and the S-3 and S-5 compartments caught fire soon after. The fire has now been put out.

The cause of fire was not immediately known.
