Sixty-three Dead, 23 Missing After Gas Blast in E. China
The death toll from a gas blast in a mine in east China's Anhui Province had risen to 63 and 23 were still missing at noon Wednesday.

The blast occurred Tuesday afternoon when 113 miners were working in the Luling coal mine. Twenty-seven had been rescued, according to earlier report.

The province's governor Wang Jinshan and vice-governor Huang Haisong were at the scene to organize and lead the rescue work. A special rescue team is carrying out the rescue work underground.

Authorities have closed all the coals mines in northern Anhui Province to inspect working conditions. Only those meeting proper safety standards could resume operations, officials said.

The cause of the blast is still under investigation.
