United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Tuesday strongly condemned the terrorist bombings in Russia's volatile republic of Chechnya and the Saudi capital of Riyadh.
"Over the past 24 hours, the world has had to bear witness, yetagain, to heinous acts of terrorism," Annan's spokesman Fred Eckhard said in a statement.
"Many innocent people, going about their daily lives or asleep in their beds with no warning of what was to come, have lost theirlives in cruel ways," he said.
"The secretary-general strongly condemns the vicious acts whichtook place in Znamenskoye (a Chechen village) and Riyadh," he noted. "They were against all decent tenets of religion, against human rights, indeed against humanity."
Earlier in the day, Annan told reporters that he hoped the recent terrorist attacks would serve as "a wake up call for everyone that terrorism is not over yet and that we must all remain vigilant."
In Znamenskoye, northern Chechnya, 54 people died and almost 200 people were injured in a suicide truck bombing outside a government building.
On late Monday, three suicide bombings hit Riyadh, leaving 29 people dead and 194 others injured, according to the Saudi interior ministry. Among the dead were seven US citizens.
