HK Company Offers Compensation to Guarantee Anti-SARS Drug
Hong Kong-based CK Life Sciences is set to release a new medicine that helps strengthen the immune system against severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), a local Chinese-language newspaper reported Tuesday.

The company has said that it would pay a huge sum to compensateits clients if they contract SARS after the treatment cycle, the Hong Kong Economic Times reported.
According to the paper, the new medicine, Vitagain, which comes in the form of a drink, requires a therapeutic cycle of 90 days and will be released in the market within this month.
Chairman of the company Victor Li was quoted by the paper as saying that should a client successfully complete the 90-day treatment period and contract SARS, the company will mete out a compensatory "health maintenance fund" of 200,000 Hong Kong dollars (25,641 US dollars).
Li was quoted as saying that as the company is still setting the price of the product, the average daily cost "should not exceed the cost of a cup of coffee."
The paper also said that the company has agreed to offer free medical consultation to its clients who suffer common cold or flu.
Currently, the new medicine is offered exclusively to the staff of CK Life Sciences and Hong Kong's public hospital staff free of charge.
A statement made to the public hospital staff of Hong Kong via the company's web-site says, "In recognition of your noble undertaking to maintain the health of Hong Kong, we would also like to make this product available to you at no charge."
According to the company's web-site, the medicine is an immuno-enhancing product that makes use of a yeast technology.
The ingredients of the product include H2O, Glycine max seed, Malus pumila, Fructus Crataegi, Semen Zizyphus, Fructus Schizandrae, Phaseolus vulgaris, Mel, Panax Schinseng and Vitagain Yeast.
