New international threats may bring closer Russia and the United States, whose bilateral talks can also be restored, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said in Moscow on Monday.
New international threats may bring closer Russia and the United States, whose bilateral talks can also be restored, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said in Moscow on Monday.
Speaking at the international conference "Russia and New World Order", Ivanov said the two nations did not act against each othereven during the Iraq crisis, but just defended their own approaches to the solution of the issue.
The two nations share common interests in confronting new global challenges, he was quoted by Interfax as saying.
Ivanov expressed his belief that it is possible for the bilateral talks to be restored to the level that existed before the Iraqi crisis, since "the dialogue never stopped even when the Iraq crisis reached its climax."
The future of Russia-US relations relies on "interaction and partnership in the interests of both nations and international stability," he said.
He also called for a multipolar world order based on expanded international efforts through global institutions, reiterating that there is no alternative to a new world order with the United Nations playing a central role as nations are becoming more interdependent in the face of growing threats.
US Ambassador to Russia Alexander Vershbow, who also attended the conference, said the United States hopes Russia will play a larger role in settling the Middle East conflict.
He said that the US-Russian cooperation will be on the agenda of US Secretary of State Colin Powell's upcoming visit to Russia, a key player in the international arena.
Vershbow told reporters that during the visit scheduled for May14-15, Powell is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putinand hold discussions with Ivanov on issues including lifting UN sanctions on Iraq and the UN role in reconstruction of post-war Iraq.
According to Vershbow, Powell and Ivanov will also discuss preparations for the US-Russia summit in St. Petersburg in June 1.
