Chinese Mainland Reports 118 New SARS Cases (May 9)

The Chinese mainland reported 118 new SARS cases and 6 new deaths between 10:00 a.m. May 8 and 10:00a.m. May 9, the Ministry of Health said Friday.

The Chinese mainland reported 118 new SARS cases and 6 new deaths between 10:00 a.m. May 8 and 10:00a.m. May 9.

The cumulative cases of severe acuterespiratory syndrome (SARS) on the Chinese mainland rose to 4,805 by 10:00 a.m. May 9, the Ministry of Health reported Friday.

Of the total cases, 1,582 patients had been discharged from hospitals upon recovery and 230 died. The Chinese mainland also reported a total of 2,566 suspected cases meanwhile.

By 10:00 am May 9, 25 provinces have reported SARS cases. So far, Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Qinghai provinces, Tibet and Xinjiang Uygur autonomous regions have not found any cases. Of the provinces having reported suspected or confirmed SARS cases, Heilongjiang Province still reports no diagnosed case; Shanghai, Anhui, Hubei, Hunan, Gansu and Ningxia provinces reported less than 10 diagnosed cases respectively; Chongqing, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Liaoning, Jiangxi and Shandong provinces reported less than 5 diagnosed cases respectively. Fujian Province has had no reported case for 31 days; Hunan Province has reported no new case for 18 days; Shandong Province has reported no new case for 15 days; Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has reported no new case for 7 days; Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region has reported no new case for 6 days; Jiangxi Province has reported no new case for 5 days.

From 10:00 am May 8 to 10:00 am May 9, China reported 118 new cases, 53 patients recovered and 6 deaths. Of the 118 cases, 62 were suspected cases and now confirmed as SARS patients.

Of these figures:

Beijing reported 48 new cases (of which 28 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), 16 patients recovered and 2 deaths

Tianjin reported 9 new cases (of which 5 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients) and 1 death

Hebei reported 9 new cases (of which 4 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), 2 patients recovered and 2 deaths

Shanxi reported 11 new cases (of which 6 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), and 15 recovered

Inner Mongolia reported 20 new cases (of which 10 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), 3 recovered and 1 death

Fujian reported 1 patient recovered

Henan reported 1 patient recovered

Guangdong reported 17 new cases (of which 7 were used to be suspected but now are confirmed as SARS patients) and 15 patients recovered

Sichuan reported 2 new cases (all of which were used to be suspected but now are confirmed as SARS patients)

Shaanxi reported 1 new case

Gansu reported 1 new case.

By 10:00 am May 9, China had a total of 4,805 SARS cases (925 medical workers), which included 1,582 patients who had recovered and been discharged from hospital and 230 deaths. Now 2,993 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals.

From 10:00 am May 8 to 10:00 am May 9, China also reported 144 new suspected cases, including 54 from Beijing, 11 from Tianjin, 6 from Hebei, 14 from Shanxi, 10 from Inner Mongolia, 4 from Shanghai, 1 from Jiangsu, 2 from Anhui, 1 each from Shandong and Hubei, 38 from Guangdong, and 1 each from Sichuan and Shaanxi.

From 10:00 am May 8 to 10:00 am May 9, China reported 164 misdiagnosed suspected cases, of which, 87 from Beijing, 36 from Guangdong, 22 from Shanxi, 5 from Inner Mongolia, 4 from Shanghai, 3 from Hebei, 2 from Ningxia, and 1 each from Tianjin, Zhejiang, Shandong, Guangxi and Shaanxi. By 10:00 am May 9, China had a total of 2,566 suspected cases.
