The International Monetary Fund(IMF) said Thursday that the economy in Asia won't get out of control if SARS could be contained quickly.
At a press briefing on Thursday, Thomas C. Dawson, Director of the External Relations Department of the International Monetary Fund said that"It is difficult to estimate the economic impact ofSARS given the uncertainties over the extent and duration of the disease."
"However, if the disease is contained soon, the macroeconomic impact in Asia should be manageable, given the robustness of the economies in the region, and the impact on the global economy limited,"said Dawson.
Dawson said that the IMF has been closely monitoring developments following SARS outbreak, which has been disrupting economic activity in several economies, mainly in Asia.
"We welcome the measures being taken--and in particular by the ASEAN plus three--to coordinate and intensify efforts to control the spread of SARS," said Dawson.
"We especially welcome the commitment by the Chinese authorities to tackle the outbreak in China and to work closely with the international community, especially the World Health Organization." said Dawson.
"We express the deepest sympathy over the loss of life and the hardships experienced as a result of SARS," said Dawson.
The SARS in Asia has been a wide concern among Asian countries and others in the world since its outbreak. Economists and institutions are trying to figure out its economic impact. IMF is one of those believing that the economic impact has remained unknown so far.
