Russia Insists Lifting Sanctions against Iraq under UN Resolutions
The sanctions against Iraq should be lifted only in compliance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council, but the procedure would take time, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yury Fedotov told Interfax on Wednesday.
The sanctions against Iraq should be lifted only in compliance with the resolutions of the UN Security Council, but the procedure would take time, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yury Fedotov told Interfax on Wednesday.
Russia wanted the sanctions, imposed on Iraq after its invasion of Kuwait in 1990, to be lifted as soon as possible in accordance with the existing resolutions of the UN Security Council, said Fedotov.
However, it would take some time to achieve the task, said Fedotov, adding that Russia hoped the consultations on the reconstruction of Iraq in the council would start as soon as possible, and his country was "ready to hold a dialogue with all of its partners" in the council.
Fedotov said Russia currently favored a "temporary solution" containing such items as to effectively suspend sanctions on goods including food and medicine.
He also proposed that the oil-for-food program should remain inforce until all the sanctions are removed.
