Guangzhou, the largest metropolis in south China, is to build three international logistics centers in the next five to 10 years, the Economic Information newspaper reported Tuesday.
The city has also planned to build five regional logistics centers at Fangcun, Baiyun, Zengcheng, Panyu and Huadu, the paper quoted Wu Ziyou, an offical with the city government, as saying.
Work had already started on the three international logistics centers. Construction of subways and the foundations of some buildings were well under way.
Operation of the logistics centers would lower the ratio of the cost of logistics in Guangzhou's gross domestic product from 17-20percent to 13 percent, Wu said.
Wu expected the logistics to become a pillar industry in Guangzhou. The next five to 10 years would see a fast growth in the sector, especially at harbors and airports, Wu said.
A modern logistics industry is still at the fledgling stage in Guangzhou.
