Moscow, Washington Have Basis to Cooperate on DPRK's Nuclear issue: Russian Official
Russia and the United States have a foundation for continuing cooperation on the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) despite existing differences, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Losyukov said Tuesday.
Russia and the United States have a foundation for continuing cooperation on the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) despite existing differences, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Losyukov said Tuesday.
He made the statement a day after a meeting with visiting US Under-Secretary of State for Arms Control John Bolton, during which they discussed the DPRK's nuclear issue.
Bolton told a press conference after meetings with Russian officials that the United States is in favor of holding multilateral talks on the DPRK nuclear issue with Russia's participation.
Losyukov, who is in charge of relations with Asian countries atthe Russian Foreign Ministry and visited Pyongyang in mid-January as Russian presidential envoy to help settle the DPRK-US standoff, said Russia and the United States differ over the tactics of resolving the issue though they have the ultimate objective.
Bolton said the United States also wants a peaceful, negotiated settlement and would emphasize this. But there is no clarity aboutthe specific steps to be taken in this direction in the near future," Losyukov said.
The nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula erupted last Octoberwhen senior US officials alleged that the DPRK had a secret nuclear weapons program. The United States later suspended its heavy oil shipment to the DPRK while the latter announced it wouldreactivate the frozen nuclear facilities for electricity production. The DPRK also pulled out from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty on Jan. 10.
