Saddam's Family Took 1 Billion Dollars from Bank: US Spokesman
Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and his family took about 1 billion dollars from Iraq's central bank just hours before the United States began bombing Iraq, the State Department said Tuesday.
Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and his family took about 1 billion dollars from Iraq's central bank just hours before the United States began bombing Iraq, the State Department said Tuesday.
The Bush administration does not know yet where the cash might have ended up, and US agents are hunting down these and other "assets stolen by the regime," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher told reporters.
"We do know from Treasury Department officials in Baghdad that approximately 1 billion dollars was taken from the Iraqi Central Bank by Saddam Hussein and his family just prior to the start of combat operations," Boucher said.
"We'll actively follow up on all the leads," he said.
