Chinese Mainland Reports 138 New SARS Cases on May 6

The Chinese mainland reported 138 new SARS cases and 8 new deaths between 10:00 a.m. May 5 and 10:00a.m. May 6, the Ministry of Health said Tuesday. The cumulative SARS cases on the Chinese mainland rose to 4,409 and death toll from the disease reached 214 by 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

The Chinese mainland reported 138 new SARS cases and 8 new deaths between 10:00 a.m. May 5 and 10:00a.m. May 6, the Ministry of Health said Tuesday.

The cumulative SARS cases on the Chinese mainland rose to 4,409 and death toll from the disease reached 214 by 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, said the ministry.

Some 1,460 SARS patients have been discharged from hospitals upon recovery.

By 10:00 am May 6, 25 provinces have reported SARS cases. So far, Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Qinghai provinces and Tibet Autonomous Region have not found any cases. Xinjiang ruled out its one remaining suspected case. Of the provinces having reported suspected or confirmed SARS cases, Heilongjiang still reports no diagnosed case; Fujian Province has had no reported case for 28 days while Shandong Province has reported no new case for 12 days. What's more, Liaoning, Zhejiang and Hunan provinces have reported no new cases for 15 successive days since April 21.

From 10:00 am May 5 to 10:00 am May 6, China reported 138 new cases, 27 patients recovered and 8 deaths. Of the 138 cases, 77 were suspected cases and now confirmed as SARS patients.

Of these figures:

Beijing reported 70 new cases (of which 37 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), 13 patients recovered and 4 deaths

Tianjin reported 11 new cases (of which 6 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients)

Hebei reported 6 new cases (of which 2 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients) and 2 patients recovered

Shanxi reported 11 new cases (of which 5 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients), 5 recovered and 3 deaths

Inner Mongolia reported 21 new cases (of which 18 used to be suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients)

Jilin reported 2 new cases (all of which were suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients)

Shanghai reported 2 new cases (all of which were suspected but now confirmed as SARS patients)

Hubei reported 2 new cases (of which 1 was suspected but now confirmed as a SARS patient)

Guangdong reported 12 new cases (of which 4 were used to be suspected but now are confirmed SARS patients), 6 patients recovered and 1 death

Guangxi reported 1 patient recovered

Gansu reported 1 new case.

By 10:00 am May 6, China had a total of 4,409 SARS cases (883 medical workers), which included 1,460 patients who had recovered and been discharged from hospital and 214 deaths. Beijing reported 7 patients who had been misdiagnosed with SARS (1 medical worker; one remaining a suspected case). Shanxi reported 2 patients who had been misdiagnosed with SARS. Now 2,735 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals.

From 10:00 am May 5 to 10:00 am May 6, China also reported 189 new suspected cases, including 80 from Beijing, 5 from Tianjin, 10 from Hebei, 19 from Shanxi, 9 from Inner Mongolia, 1 from Shanghai, 5 from Jiangsu, 1 from Zhejiang, 3 from Anhui, 2 from Hubei, 50 from Guangdong, and 4 from Shaanxi.

From 10:00 am May 5 to 10:00 am May 6, China reported 70 misdiagnosed suspected cases, of which, 30 from Beijing, 18 from Guangdong, 6 from Shanxi, 5 from Shaanxi, 4 from Hebei, 3 from Inner Mongolia, 1 each from Tianjin, Henan, Hunan and Xinjiang. By 10:00 am May 6, China had a total of 2,646 suspected cases.

Beijing reports 70 new SARS cases
From 10:00 a.m. May 5 to 10:00 a.m. May 6, Beijing reported 70 new SARS cases and 4 deaths from the disease, the Ministry of Health said here Tuesday.

Foreign, HK and Taiwan SARS patients discharged from hospitals
Four foreign, one Hong Kong and one Taiwan SARS patients in Beijing have been discharged from hospitals upon recovery, a senior local official said in Beijing Tuesday.

Cai Fuchao, director of the publicity department of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said the four foreign patients are from the United States, Canada, Australia and Kyrgyzstan.

Six foreigners were confirmed SARS patients in Beijing, Cai said. "So far, there is a people from the United States still in hospital for medical treatment and his condition is stable," he said.

Pekka Aro, an official with the International Labor Organization, died of the SARS last month, he said.

Cai said so far there are three suspected SARS cases among overseas people in Beijing.

"Two cases have been ruled out after further diagnoses were made, and one person from India is now receiving medical treatment," Cai said.
