Residents in several central US states were cleaning up Monday from twisters that killed 35, as authorities in the storm's path braced themselves for the deadly tornadoes.

The line of storms ripped through Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and western Tennessee overnight, leaving a swath of destruction, deaths and injuries. Missouri reported 15 deaths, and neighboring Kansas seven, while 11 were killed in western Tennessee.

Earlier television reports said at least 37 people were killed in the three states. Other people thought to be in the storms'path were reported missing.

Tornado warnings were issued Monday afternoon for counties in southern Tennessee and in Kentucky, officials said.

President George W. Bush offered his condolences to the victimsat a stop in Arkansas, saying the federal government would move asquickly as possible to help the storm-damaged areas.

Houses across the region were flattened, trees were uprooted and power lines cut off. State of emergency has been declared in storm-damaged counties in Kansas, Missouri and Tennessee.

Lawrence County in southern Missouri and Madison County in Tennessee appeared to be the hardest hit. Residents in Pierce City,a town of nearly 1,400 residents in Lawrence County, said the downtown was "pretty much leveled," while those in the city of Jackson in Madison County said the town was like a war zone.
