Retired US general Jay Garner announced Monday that nine Iraqis from different opposition factions would form an interim government.
"I think what you may see is as many as seven, eight, nine leaders working together to provide leadership," Garner told reporters here.
According to Garner, the nine Iraqis include Massoud Barzani of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Ahmad Chalabi of the Iraqi National Congress, Jalal Talabani of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Iyad Allawi of the Iraqi National Accord.
The interim government is due to be set up by mid-May to help rebuild Iraq, Garner added.
"By the middle of the month, you'll really see a beginning of a nucleus of an Iraqi government with an Iraqi face on it that is dealing with the coalition," said Garner.
When referring to Mohammed Mohsen Zubeidi, the self-proclaimed mayor of Baghdad who was arrested by US forces, Garner said that he had been released after 48 hours.
The condition for his release was that he not resume his activity of asserting authority in Baghdad, Garner said.
