A total of 4.62 million mobile phones were exported via the port of Shanghai in the first three months of the year, up 32.9 percent from the same period last year, according to Shanghai Customs on Sunday.

Of the total, 2.36 million cell phones were exported to Germany,650,000 were exported to the United States, and 580,000 were exported to Singapore.

Processing trade accounted for 4.44 million cell phones, an increase of 28.3 percent, while another 160,000 were exported via general trade, an 11-fold increase.

During the same period, Shanghai imported 664,000 cell phones, an increase of 630 percent on last year.

In total, 496,000 sets of cell phones were imported via Shanghai Port from the Republic of Korea (ROK), and 165,000 mobile phones were shipped from Taiwan. No cell phones were imported from Taiwan last year.

Cell phones from the ROK and from Taiwan from January to March made up 99.55 percent of cell phone imports via Shanghai Port.

Surging import and export of cell phones is attributed to drastic tariff cuts in the wake of China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO).
