The Beijing municipal government has dispatched another 60 ambulances to transport SARS patients, bringing the number of ambulances at the Beijing 120 First Aid Center to 90 and increasing its transport capacity to 500 patients per day.
Tang Qi, Party secretary of the center, said that since SARS had hit Beijing the hospital had taken responsibility for transporting SARS patients and suspected carriers to designated hospitals.
With the number of SARS infected patients increasing, the center was struggling to keep up because the ambulances had to be disinfected every trip and medical staff also needed to change clothes.
To bridge the shortage, Beijing dispatched more ambulances and set up a special SARS patient transport headquarters, ordering the city's 18 districts and counties to dispatch four ambulances each to supplement the service.
Meanwhile, more than 140 of the city's major general hospitals have been ordered to assign one ambulance solely tasked with taking SARS patients to designated hospitals.
