70 Chinese Navy Sailors Killed in Submarine Disaster
A conventional submarine from the navy of the PLA has been wrecked due to mechanical failure when taking part in a drilling east of Neichangshan islands, leaving all 70 on board dead.
Seventy Chinese Navy sailors aboard a conventionally powered Navy submarine have been killed in an accident in the water area east of Neichangshan, East China's Shandong Province.
Jiang Zemin, chairman of the Central Military Commission, has sent condolence messages, dated May 2, to family members of the dead Navy officers and seamen.
The No. 361 submarine was taking part in a drilling east of Neichangshan Islands, when mechanical problems caused the accident, said Navy sources. The wreckage was towed back to harbour.
The submarine crew greatly contributed to the modernization of the People's Liberation Army and their deaths are a serious loss to the PLA navy, Jiang said in his telegram.
