A visiting expert from the World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday advised the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) to continue putting on a high alert of the prevention of viral pneumonia.

Although Macao's surrounding regions including south China's Guangdong Province and Hong Kong SAR have basically controlled thelarge spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Macao still needs to be "very cautious" in dealing with the disease prevention, said Cathryn Murphy, an infection control expert from WHO, who arrived in Macao Thursday night.

Murphy had just concluded an inspection tour in Singapore before she came to Macao. She will join other WHO experts in Beijing on May 6 after finishing the investigation in Macao.

Murphy said that WHO investigators will report on the SARS control and prevention in Singapore, Macao and Beijing based on the data they collected to the organization's West-Pacific Headquarters, which is brewing a "Priority Action Plan" on the SARS control.

Murphy said she will comment on Macao's SARS preparedness and prevention after she finishes investigation on May 5.

Murphy is the second WHO expert came to the Macao SAR, after the disease broke out in China. In April, her colleague, Doctor Kouichi Morita commented that the preventive measures taken by theMacao SAR government against SARS was quite effective.

Only one suspected SARS case in Macao has been listed on WHO's counting of SARS cases. The patient, a 38-year-old saleslady, has been hospitalized for isolation treatment for 12 days. The Hong Kong Health Department has made PCR tests of the woman's respiratory secretion sample twice, both of which showed negative of coronavirus.

Koi Kuok Ieng, head of the Macao Health Service, said the womanis recovering and would be allowed to leave the hospital soon.
