Chinese Mainland Reports 176 New SARS Cases

The Chinese mainland reported 176 new severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) cases and 11 new deaths between 10:00 a.m. of May 1 and 10:00 a.m. of May 2, according to the Ministry of Health Friday.

The cumulative SARS cases on the Chinese mainland rose to 3,799 and 181 had died as of 10:00 a.m. on Friday. Some 1,372 SARS patients have been discharged from hospitals upon recovery.

From 10:00 a.m. May 1 to 10:00 a.m. May 2, Beijing reported 96 new SARS cases and nine deaths from the disease, the Ministry of Health said.

Of these figures: Beijing reported 96 new cases (of which 48 used to be suspected cases and now are confirmed as SARS patients), 9 patients recovered and 9 deaths; Tianjin reported 12 new cases; Hebei reported 14 new cases (of which 4 used to be suspected cases and now are confirmed as SARS patients); Shanxi reported 4 new cases (of which 1 used to be a suspected case and now is confirmed as SARS patient), 7 patients recovered; Inner Mongolia reported 26 new cases (of which 20 used to be suspected cases and now are confirmed as SARS patients), 3 recovered, and 2 deaths; Jilin reported 5 new cases (of which 3 used to be suspected cases and now are confirmed as SARS patients); Jiangsu reported 3 new cases (of which 2 used to be suspected cases and now are confirmed as SARS patients); Anhui reported 2 new cases; Henan reported 1 new case; Hubei reported 1 new case (which used to be a suspected case and now is confirmed as SARS patient); Guangdong reported 9 new cases, and 2 recovered; Guangxi reported 2 new cases (of which 1 used to be a suspected case and now is confirmed as SARS patient); Shaanxi reported 1 new case.

By 10 am of May 2, China had a total of 3,799 SARS cases (including 778 medical workers), which included 1,372 patients who had recovered and been discharged from hospital and 181 deaths. Beijing reported 13 patients (including 3 medical workers) who had been falsely diagnosed with SARS. Sichuan reported 2 patients who had been falsely diagnosed with SARS.

From 10 am of May 1 to 10 am of May 2, China also reported 322 new suspected cases, including 145 from Beijing, 16 from Tianjin, 11 from Hebei, 26 from Shanxi, 23 from Inner Mongolia, 7 from Jilin, 3 from Shanghai, 1 from Jiangsu, 4 from Anhui, 1 from Henan, 1 from Hubei, 1 from Hunan, 71 from Guangdong, 3 from Guangxi, 1 from Chongqing, 6 from Shaanxi, and 2 from Ningxia.

From 10 am of May 1 to 10 am of May 2, various local reports also ruled out a total of 74 suspected cases. By 10 am of May 2, China had a total of 2,459 suspected cases.

Meanwhile, China has stepped up the efforts to combat the SARS spread.

China's Health Ministry has urged health sectors at all levels to give proper training to health and medical workers on the prevention and treatment of SARS. The ministry also stesses that tracking all contacts with those who are close to SARS patients is extremely critical.

The Ministry of Water Resources are taking measures to ensure safe water supply to households, and have requested designated SARS hospitals to report all dumping of waste water in a timely manner everytime.

China's Red Across is currently receiving donations through designated hotlines and already received over 3.7 million yuan or roughly 450 thousand US dollars over the past three days.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs has put a halt to all public large-scale donation and charity events across the country to avoid the spread of the disease.

Ministry of Public Security has issued a notice asking local police to be equipped with protective gear when carrying out a SARS-related mission. Local police stations are expected to provide protective clothing, glasses, gloves, shoe mittens and face masks to all police working in or near a SARS area.

In Beijing, a senior official says the capital, to date, hasn't found a single rural resident confirmed to be infected by SARS.

Cai Fuchao, director of the publicity department of the Beijing Municipal Committee says at a press conference, the municipal government has called officials from all levels in rural Beijing to take absolute measures to ensure the health of residents in their administrative areas.

Cai Fuchao says students who applied to return to their hometown must meet several strict criteria, and college authorities are required to keep in close contact with those who have already left Beijing.

He says of the 670,000 college students in Beijing, 39 have been confirmed to have infected with SARS.
