An additional 11 patients were confirmed to have SARS following admission to public hospitals earlier and five patients died as at 1 pm Thursday.
The deceased include five men who are aged from 34 to 83 and this brought to 162 the total number of deaths relating to SARS.
The newly-contracted include two healthcare workers from Prince of Wales Hospital. The remaining nine are patients and contacts of patients with SARS.
Meanwhile, a total of 834 patients have recovered from SARS and have been discharged from public hospitals. Of them, 43 were discharged Thursday.
The Hong Kong Hospital authority urged the discharged people to keep staying at home for at least two weeks to avoid the possibilities to spread the SARS virus to other people.
There are also 102 recovering patients who are in convalescence and preparation for discharge.
Most of the patients currently in hospital are showing positive responses to the new treatment protocol. Eighty-eight patients arereceiving treatment in intensive care unit.
Also, 12 SARS patients had suffered relapses after being released from hospital recently.
Six of the relapsed patients were back in hospital and their condition was described as stable, while the other six have been released again.
The Hong Kong medical authorities are examining the cause of the relapses.
Yuen Kwok-hung, a microbiologist at the University of Hong Kong,said on a local radio program that the SARS disease could be put under control this month as the SARS virus may not be active during the summer time.
However, he warned Hong Kong residents not to lower their guardas he feared the virus may stage a comeback next winter.
