China's Mainland Suspends Exchanges of Visits with Taiwan
China's mainland has suspended the approval of group visits to Taiwan so as to curb the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, a mainland spokesman said in Beijing Wednesday.
China's mainland has suspended the approval of group visits to Taiwan so as to curb the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, a mainland spokesman said in Beijing Wednesday.
Certain groups that had already been approved were also prohibited from making the journey until further notice, said the spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council in Beijing.
"We are confident that cross-Strait exchanges and contacts of personnel will continue to develop after SARS is curtailed with the concerted efforts of the people across the Strait," said the spokesman.
Cross-Strait exchanges and visits kept rising in the first quarter this year, he noted. With the outbreak of SARS, however, he said, the number of exchanges and visits started to decrease from late March.
