Uruguayan Ambassador Pelayo Diaz-Muguerza describes how his life has changed since Beijing confirmed many more SARS cases and adopted various restrictive measures:

My professional life is as usual these days although the amount of SARS cases in Beijing is increasing sharply.

One of the differences is that I have to wear a face mask nearly all the time, even in the office.

When the Beijing municipal government issued a regulation suspending the use of cultural and entertainment venues, we embassy staff fully accepted it.

I do not feel much inconvenience, even though it is a pity that there are no concerts in the city now.

But this provides me with more chances to stay at home and read. This is also a very good way to enjoy the little leisure time I have.

Last weekend, I went to the Summer Palace and I enjoyed the trip very much.

Of course, there were not as many tourists there as on previous days. I guess Beijing residents have followed the government's advice to reduce the time spent outside.

The members of my family, who all live in my home country, have been very concerned with my health in recent days.

I tried to convince them that, although the situation of SARS spreading in Beijing is difficult, there is no panic, even when the figures have witnessed sharp increases for several days.

The central government and the Beijing municipal government have done their utmost to adopt all the measures they can to make things better.

I trust the government decisions and my embassy is permanently in contact with the Chinese authorities.
