The World Health Organization (WHO)welcomed Tuesday the unprecedented efforts being made by China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to coordinate their fight against the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
WHO Director-General, Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, stressed the importance of international cooperation in the battle against SARS, saying "It is now we have a chance to contain it, and we must use public health tools that we have at our disposal."
The Chinese and ASEAN leaders met for a special meeting on SARS in Bangkok on Tuesday, at which Dr. David Heymann, the WHO executive director for communicable diseases, also delivered a speech.
Heymann reminded the leaders that there are two simple strategies that can contain and eventually stop SARS -- detecting all cases and protecting those at risk of being infected.
Countries must detect and treat SARS cases early while taking effective measures to protect the rest of the population, he noted.
At the Bangkok meeting, China and the ASEAN countries agreed to standardize screening of all travelers, quarantine and treat identified SARS cases, and share accurate and timely information.
