The US forces in Iraq has reached a cease-fire with an Iranian terrorist group designated bythe United States, and expected it to surrender soon with some of its arms, The New York Times reported Tuesday.
The deal was clinched between the US forces and Iranian opposition group the People's Mujahedeen on April 15 and was confirmed by the US Central Command on Tuesday.
Under the agreement, the US forces would not damage any of the group's vehicles, equipment or any of its property in its camps in Iraq, and not to commit any hostile act toward the Iranian opposition forces covered by the agreement, the paper quoted US military officials as saying.
In return, the People's Mujahedeen agreed not to fire on or commit other hostile acts against the US forces and agreed to place its artillery and antiaircraft guns in non-threatening positions.
Since the Sept. 11 terror attacks on the United States in 2001,the Bush government has given the highest priority to the fight against terrorism worldwide. But the deal, the first of its kind between the US military and a terror group, raises questions about how consistently the Bush administration intends to apply a policy that had vowed to crack down on terror group worldwide, the paper said.
The US move was criticized by Iran, which said that Iran could not accept any collaboration with the terror group and urged the United States honor UN resolution 1373 on international campaign against terrorism.
