Chinese sci-tech workers should actively participate in the drive against the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) by utilizing the power of science.

According to a proposal issued jointly Tuesday by the Ministry of Science and Technology and other education and sci-tech departments, the epidemic situation of SARS poses a new challenge for scientists, and it is the duty of sci-tech workers to defeat the disease by using various scientific resources.

It is most pressing now to take decisive measures to check the spread of SARS, said the proposal, urging sci-tech departments at all levels to spare no effort to provide practical proposals for the collection of epidemic information, for cutting off the sources of infection and for calming the general public.

The proposal calls for sci-tech workers to share resources and exchange information with health and military researchers, and to refer to overseas experts and advanced technology. It also encourage all research institutes, universities and health care institutes, conditions permitting, to undertake researches relating to the prevention, examination and control of SARS.

Meanwhile, the proposal urges sci-tech workers to disseminate knowledge on SARS pathogenesis, preventive methods, channels of infection and methods of treatment as soon as possible, and to simultaneously fight against pseudo-science, superstitions and rumors so as to help maintain social order and calm down the public.
