The final connection of the whole outer-ring tunnel in Shanghai was completed in the morning of April 28, which not only indicated that the whole outer-ring tunnel was cut through, but also meant that closure of the 99-km outer-ring road line had been accomplished at the bottom of the Huangpu River.

The Shanghai outer-ring tunnel, 2,880 meters in length, is the key link in the north section of the outer-ring road line to cross the Huangpu River. It is a cross-river tunnel, which is constructed by using the method of sinking pipelines for the first time. The length of the piping section is 736-meter long, the pipe is buried to the greatest depth of 33 meters, there is a total of seven joint pipe sections. The tunnel consists of eight lanes with a designed speed of 80 km/hr.

The project of the outer-ring tunnel has the characteristics of complicated techniques, difficult construction and plentiful new technologies. In the construction process, United Tunnel Stock under Shanghai Urban Construction Group Company, Shanghai Channel Bureau and Hong Kong Construction (Holdings) Limited jointly constructed the tunnel and overcame a series of difficulties, such as the construction site close to the estuary of the Yangtze River, the changeable tidal water level, the poor seabed light-transmitting conditions and the proportioning of reinforced concrete of the piping section itself. They successively finished the construction of the 7 joint pipe section in the middle of the river, each of which is 43 meters wide, 9.55 meters high, 100 to 108 meters long and weighing 45,000 tons. The successful completion of the outer-ring tunnel marks that China's pipe-sinking method for tunnel construction has reached the advanced international level.

It is reported that the outer-ring tunnel project of Shanghai will be opened to traffic by the end of this June.
