The World Badminton Championships in Birmingham, England, next month are likely to be called off due to the SARS outbreak.

The power base for both Olympic sports are in Asia, where is hardest hit by the deadly SARS virus.

The badminton championships are the first qualification tournament for next year's Olympic Games in Athens and are expected to attract 350 competitors from 48 countries.

A decision on postponing the event is expected within days.

Meanwhile, the International Table Tennis Federation says the championships in Paris in mid-May would go ahead.

But it says delegations from SARS-affected delegations, including Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Canada and Vietnam, could be subjected to special measures on their arrival in Paris.
