Seven SARS Cases Confirmed in India

A man tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in India's east city of Calcutta on Sunday, taking the number of SARS-infected people in the country to seven.

A man tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in India's east city of Calcutta on Sunday, taking the number of SARS-infected people in the country to seven.

The man, 42, who was under treatment at a hospital in the city, developed fever and symptoms of pneumonia on Thursday, an official of the Health Ministry told the press here.

Health officials were waiting pathological results of 13 other suspected cases in six states, according to a press release issued by the ministry.

Four confirmed SARS cases were reported from the southwest city of Pune, while Goa, Calcutta and Mumbai reported one SARS case each, said the ministry.

As of now, the release said, there were 20 suspected cases under treatment at various hospitals in the country with seven confirmed of having SARS virus while reports in 13 such cases are awaited.

Health Department of West Bengal state has directed all government hospitals in Calcutta to set up isolated wards with 10 beds each for suspected SARS patients, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI).
