J. K. Rowling, author of bestseller "Harry Potter," is richer than Queen Elizabeth II, an annual survey issued by the Sunday Times newspaper said.

Under the survey, which estimates the fortunes of Britain's richest people, Rowling has accumulated a personal fortune of 280 million pounds (444 million US dollars) in the past two years.

Of her wealth, 150 million pounds (238 million dollars) came from her books and the rest from film rights and Harry Potter merchandise.

That placed the 37-year-old woman at 122 in the "Rich List," 11places ahead of the British Queen whom the survey estimated has a fortune of 250 million pounds (397 million dollars).

Rowling is also the richest female author in the world since the sales of her "Harry Potter" series have topped 190 million copies worldwide.

The Sunday Times report said Rowling first entered the "Rich List" in 2001, four years after the publication of her first book,"Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone."

Her personal wealth stood at 65 million pounds (103 million dollars) in 2001 and 226 million pounds (359 million dollars) last year, the report estimated.

Rowling's fifth book in the "Harry Potter" series is due out this summer and the third film of Harry Potter is on its way.

The Duke of Westminster, whose fortune includes massive swaths of central London real estate, topped the list for the third year in a row, with 4.9 billion pounds (7.7 billion dollars).

The report noted that the total wealth of the 1,000 richest Britons falls by about two percent.
