Hong Kong police has begun to use its major event investigation and disaster-relief system to help trace the residence locations of SARS patients and suspected cases, in an effort to curb the further spread of the disease.
An official of the HK police said on Friday that the information on over 1,500 SARS patients in Hong Kong consists of over 12,000 pieces. To trace people having close contacts with them in the past 10 days, the system have to process over 100,000 pieces of information.
The Department of Health sends information on the SARS patients to the police every day, which is then input into the police's computer system. The comprehensive computer data processing and analysis will help find the most dangerous SARS-hit places.
So far, Amoy Garden, where more than 300 cases have been reported, is on the top of the list.
The Hong Kong police said the computer system is designed for investigation of major criminal cases and disasters. Its aid for the anti-SARS campaign will not affect the normal operation of the police.
