The European Commission's spokeswoman for Foreign Affairs Emma Udwin said here Friday that the European Union (EU) hopes for a political resolution of the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
She said that the EU has been "following closely" the latest developments of the three-way negotiations held in Beijing since it is of great interest to the 15-member bloc.
"We are following the situation closely. And we hope for a nuclear-free peninsula in the region, because it is good for the peace and stability of the whole region," she said.
When asked about the reports that the DPRK has possessed nuclear bombs, she said that it is "absolutely difficult" to ascertain whether the reports are true to the facts.
As to the EU's role in the nuclear issue, she said that the Beijing initiative is working well and that "nothing has been planned at the moment as far as the EU is concerned."
