Mountaineers and tourists can now call relatives and friends from the roof of the world.

At the Mt. Qomolangma Base Camp more than 5,200 meters above sea level, China Mobile has opened a mobile communication service with a supporting station Friday.

The newly-built station, with its signal covering a 25-square-kilometer area, can service more than 2,000 mobile users, said Nyima Cering, deputy director of network department of Tibet Mobile.

The station transmits not only voice messages, but also photos and character data, according to Nyima Cering.

"It is a landmark to realize wireless Internet connection based on mobile communication at Qomolangma," said Zhang Zhaoyang, chief executive officer of Sohu.com.
