Chinese President Hu Jintao has expressed deep grief for the death of Deng Lianxian, a doctor who died of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) after he was infected on duty.

In written instructions on Wednesday, Hu, also general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, also offered sympathy and solicitude to family members of Deng Lianxian.
The president said, with the hard working and devotion of the broad mass of medical workers and with the unity of the whole nation, China will surely beat the disease.
After working for more than 30 hours on duty without taking a rest, Deng Lianxian, 53, contracted the disease on February 1 while treating SARS patients, and died on April 21 despite a major medical effort.
Deng was an experienced doctor with the Infectious Disease Department of the No. 3 Hospital affiliated with Zhongshan University in Guangdong Province, South China.
