Another SARS Case Recorded in Indonesia
The Indonesian government announced Wednesday that it has recorded another patient who is under observation of having infected by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) here.
The Indonesian government announced Wednesday that it has recorded another patient who is under observation of having infected by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) here.
"An Indonesian housewife came to hospital by herself to get medical treatment," said Syafei Achmad, secretary general of Preventing Infecting Disease in the Indonesian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare at a press briefing here.
According to Achmad, the woman has a negative travel history.
He also said that the condition of a 67-year-old Indonesian citizen of Chinese descent, who was possibly suspected of having infected by the disease, in Adam Malik Hospital in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra, has been gradually improved.
Achmad said that since the man was hospitalized, he has possibly infected 6 other people, including three medical staffs and three of his family members.
The six people all have been isolating in the hospital, the secretary general said.
He also said that the Chinese patient, who was suspected of having infected by SARS in the Sulianti Suroso Hospital in Jakarta,has also possibly infected eight people, who are in home isolationnow.
The Indonesian government has set up a team to prevent patientsescaping from the medical supervision. The team involves officialsand experts from ministries of health and social welfare, education, justice and human rights, foreign affairs as well as the national police.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines a suspected SARS sufferer as a person with body temperature above 38 degrees, plus a cough, breathing difficulty or shortness of breath; and close contact with a SARS case or a record of travelling from an affected area.
